Our Story

Lake Huron Home is Kincardine’s newest furniture, appliance and mattress store. Locally owned and operated by two of Kincardine’s very own, Dan McFadden and Sadie Al (nee Shewfelt).

Dan has lived in Kincardine for close to 20 years. He grew up with entrepreneurial parents in the funeral business and in 1999 he went on to own and operate his family business in Chesley. In 2004, he purchased the Davey Linklater Funeral Home in Kincardine with his wife Kim. They raised their 3 children; Madison, Garrett and Bryce in this quaint small town and have loved every minute of it. In 2018 Dan sold the funeral home. He was ready to retire and up for the challenge of change…. although he didn’t know what that was. He tried working at a couple of local businesses but found that after the many years of being your own boss it was very hard to become the employee, not to mention, he was still young and needed a challenge. Some may call him crazy but on April 1st, 2020, the day the doors of all small businesses across Ontario were locked, Dan became the new owner of B&W Appliances in downtown Kincardine. He knew very little about the appliance industry but was excited to take on his latest adventure. Luckily, he had B&W’s right hand guy Richard there with him, teaching him the ropes. Richard has been an employee of B&W for 15 years and will continue at Lake Huron Home as well. It has been a crazy two years to be a small business owner but that never held Dan’s entrepreneurial spirit back. He knew he wanted to see growth in the town in terms of accessibility to furniture. He had mentioned this to Sadie a few times and knew she was interested in pursuing this idea, but Sadie was ideally thinking 5-10 years down the road. However, timing truly is everything…. When the perfect location became available in early 2022 Dan knew he had to get Sadie on board.

Sadie is born and raised in Kincardine. Her family (the Shewfelt’s) have owned businesses on the same corner for over 100 years, Queen and Lambton Street. Sadie grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs. All her grandparents and both parents ran their own businesses. From a young age Sadie learnt the importance of hard work, respect and service in a small town. When Sadie moved off to college, she had no idea what she wanted to do. She loved retail and had experience working at a local Clothing shop downtown and at her mom’s business Sleepers Bed Gallery. She also loved event planning and had done a co-op and 2 summer student positions with Bruce Powers communications team. In her 3rd year of college, she won an award that opened the opportunity to take a year off school and work for a local MPP in Kitchener-Waterloo. This was a sector that interested Sadie and so with both feet she jumped right in. It was a year of growth and major learning experiences…. But after the year she knew two things for sure:

  1. She wanted to be her own boss
  2. She wanted to take over her mom’s business, Sleepers Bed Gallery

So, for the last 5 years Sadie, along side her mom, Heather, have run Sleepers Bed Gallery in downtown Kincardine. In 2020 Sadie became part owner of Sleepers Bed Gallery. She loves working in Lakeside Downtown Kincardine. Sadie and her husband Derek reside in the municipality, and this fall they will be adding a new little bundle to their family. Sadie is so excited for this new chapter in life. Sleepers Bed Gallery which has been in business since 1996 will remain open for business and downtown. Sadie will work between the two stores.
